London Vet Show 2018

At the 2018 London Vet Show AVS hosted the first ever student run panel! Titled “EMS making it work for Students and Vets” we revealed the results of our latest EMS Survey and had an exclusive reveal of our EMS resource which is designed to help students get the most out of all of their EMS placements!

Sports 2018 - Nottingham

This November students from all nine UK and Ireland Vet Schools (and Utrecht!) travelled to Nottingham for an action packed weekend! A massive thank you to the organising committee led by Izzie, Pippa and Tom!

Congress 2018 - Bristol

In early February, students travelled down to Bristol for the 2018 Congress. The weekend started with a pub crawl around central Bristol ending up in the Brass Pig, which was fitting for a group of vet students! On the Saturday and Sunday people split into their respective streams and had a day filled with incredible practicals and fascinating lectures. Highlights included a practical using endoscopic instrument simulators and a fierce debate on the future of farming.  There was a fabulous ball on the Saturday evening with speeches from the AVS and BVA president and of course lots of dancing. On the Saturday there was a keynote lecture from Steve Leonard (That Vet off TV) all about his experience working as a wildlife vet on various TV series fittingly titled "we're going to need a bigger glove" and on Sunday AVS had their AGM which highlighted a successful year, exciting plans for the future and lots of candidates running for the 2018 AVS and IVSA Committee.

Sports 2017 - Edinburgh 

Edinburgh were hosts for AVS Sports Weekend 2017 and welcomed vet students from all the vet schools. Everyone was so excited for this year, with Surrey vet student's camping overnight to secure their tickets, and Edinburgh definitely didn't disappoint! With a bar crawl on Friday Night, sports on Saturday and one last night out on Saturday, even the cold weather couldn't dampen people's spirits! Liverpool were the deserving winners of the AVS cup! Costume highlights this year included Shrek, EasyJet and Where's Wally!

Congress 2017 - Cambridge

January 2017 was finally time for Cambridge to show everyone what we could do. As always, the weekend kicked off in style with a bar crawl around the beautiful city followed by two whole days of lectures and practicals. Highlights included a bovine TB panel discussion, a natural horsemanship seminar run by Kelly Marks, a small animal CPR practical run by VetsNow and a lecture about rabbit medicine and surgery by Frances Harcourt-Brown, the first RCVS recognised specialist in this area.
The ball on the Saturday night was one highlight that many people had been waiting for – a traditional Cambridge formal in the Great Hall of Selwyn College. The 3 course dinner was of course followed by cheese and port, what else would you expect from Cambridge?!

Sports Weekend 2016 - RVC

In November 2016 over 1 000 vet students at RVC where students were first shown the best nightlife available in Hertfordshire and were greeted by a lovely warm pizza which was a welcome sight for students who travelled from far and wide. As usual the costumes were top notch with OAPs, Unicorns and the Cheshire Cat being spotted. Saturday dawned and with it the most highly contested sports fixtures ever recorded in the history of mankind with RVC being crowned victorious. In the evening, students travelled into central London and after a pit-stop to warm up, had a brilliant night busting some dance moves, some of which were more questionable than others!

Congress 2016 - Liverpool

At the beginning of February, vet students from across the UK and Ireland travelled to Liverpool for this years’ Congress.The weekend began with an introduction to Liverpool’s night life which included pineapple cocktails and lots of dancing to cheesy music. The next day, all students arrived at Liverpool’s Leahurst Campus and were split onto their respective streams: Farm, Small Animal, Equine and Exotic for a day of exciting and inspiring talks and practicals. Farm visited a mega dairy and learnt about lame lambs, Exotic learnt about specialist husbandry conditions for parrots and handled snakes, a raccoon dog and bearded dragons. Equine learnt about the industry abroad and handled uteruses during a fertility demonstration, while Small Animals debated the puppy trade and experienced interactive Cardiology. There was also a great Careers Fayre throughout the weekend which really highlighted the endless opportunities for vet students.
On Saturday evening, everyone had a chance to dress up and dance at the AVS Ball. The night featured: a three-course meal, speeches from the AVS and BVA presidents, and live entertainment from the brilliant MooCows!
The weekend finished with the AVS AGM which was a great opportunity for the whole vet student community to hear about the work that AVS carry out all year round and what they plan to achieve in the future.

Sports 2014 - Dublin

In 2014 AVS Sports Weekend was held in Dublin. Despite a long journey by sea or air for many, it was well worth it and the weekend was a great success. Friday night was spent at The Wright Venue with J90, with some top notch grub being supplied by Wok'n'Roll. The sports on Saturday were unfortunately cut short by bad weather, but that wasn't allowed to dampen our spirits and an afternoon of Irish dancing festivities kept everyone going until the pub crawl around the Temple Bar area in the evening. Liverpool were successful in retaining the AVS Sports Cup by winning their respective rugby and football matches. On the Sunday, some groups got to soak up a bit of Dublin culture, with many heading to the castle and the Guinness brewery.
